Welcome to JCB ELSE
Housed at John C. Birdlebough High School in Phoenix, NY, the Essential Life Skills Education class focuses on the development of independent skills, functional academics, community access skills, and transition skills to successfully move into post-secondary life.
The goal for all ELSE students is to continue to develop their communication skills, independent living skills, problem solving abilities as the enter the world of supervised and unsupervised employment. Through school, community visits and participation in part-time work study, our students will be focused on developing greater confidence, accomplishment and self-reliance. Some students attend various general education classes with their typical peers; classes such as Earth Science, MS Word, Art and tech classes. All students attend a Physical Education class which fits their needs. Students who are interested can participate in Unified Basketball in the spring. This is a Varsity sport and students play competitively against other teams from with in Section 3.
Students engage in various activities throughout the year allowing for hands on experiences and creates cooperation. Students must participate in order to learn. Our school-based enterprise, SOUP~HERBS, is a great place to start learning those skills needed to be part of a team. Our older students attend the Vocational Education Program at the 4th Street School in Fulton, NY (a CITI sponsored program) for half a day and return to the high school in the afternoon. The students put what they learned in the school environment to work in the VEP ceramics studio and other jobs under the supervision of the VEP instructors and job coaches.
